Curing color blindness.

Researchers at the university of Washington have used virus vectors to manipulate the gene producing L-opsin to give male squirrel monkeys the ability to distinguish red and green.

This might be one step on the way to curing not only color blindness, but to restore or revitalize sight with humans as well..

PeBe requested some more Fora.tv lectures, I'll post some now.. Fora.tv is a really great site, which presents both sides of most of the interesting debates going on, from all over the lecture cycle.

Thomas Szasz

Thomas Szasz is a psychiatrist and academic, born in 1920. He is a prominent figure in the antipsychiatry movement, a well-known social critic of the moral and scientific foundations of psychiatry, and of the social control aims of medicine in modern society, as well as of scientism.

Together with the Church of Scientology, Szasz co-founded the Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR), in 1969, to help clean up the field of human rights abuses. He remains on CCHR's Board of Advisors as Founding Commissioner, and continues to provide content for the CCHR. Shangri-La

Howard Dean

Howard Brush Dean III (born November 17, 1948) is an American politician and physician from the U.S. state of Vermont. He served six terms as Governor of Vermont and ran unsuccessfully for the 2004 Democratic Presidential nomination. He was the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2005 to 2009.

Sublimation

In psychology, sublimation is a term coined by Friedrich Nietzsche which was eventually used to describe the spirit as a reflection of the libido. Sublimation is when displacement "serves a higher cultural or socially useful purpose, as in the creation of art or inventions

In Freud's classic theory, erotic energy is only allowed limited expression due to constraints of human society. Freud considered this defense mechanism the most productive compared to the others that he identified (ie., repression, displacement, denial,reaction formation, intellectualization and projection). Sublimation is the process of transforming libido into "socially useful" achievements, mainly art. Psychoanalysts often refer to sublimation as the only truly successful defense mechanism.

Interpersonal psychoanalysis defines sublimation as the unwitting substitution of a partial satisfaction with social approval for the pursuit of a direct satisfaction which would be contrary to one's ideals or to the judgement of social censors and other important people who surround one.

John Coleman was an American news weather forecaster. He founded The Weather Channel (but is no longer affiliated with it), and presently works as an on-camera weathercaster at KUSI-TV in San Diego. Ted Bundy is a notorius American serial killer who murdered numerous young women between 1974 and 1978. He twice escaped from prison before his final apprehension in February 1978. Typically, Bundy would bludgeon his victims, then strangle them to death. He also engaged in rape and necrophilia.

Cataglyphis is a genus of ant in the subfamily Formicinae. The Aquatic Ape theory

The aquatic ape hypothesis (AAH), sometimes

referred to as the aquatic ape theory, is a theory about the evolution of humans hypothesizing that many of the characteristics that distinguish modern humans from the common ancestors of the Hominidae genetic family are the result of a period of evolution in proximity to bodies of water. Characteristics include a relatively thick layer of subcutaneous fat, the pattern and sparse amount of hair on the skin, upright posture, dietary needs for omega-3 fatty acids, the opposable thumb, a descended larynx, thewaxy coating on the skin of infants, the shape of the nose and voluntary control over respiration. The evolutionary pressures thought to explain these changes include methods of feeding (underwater foraging) and types of food eaten (fish and shellfish).

The hypothesis was posed in the 60's, but has only gradually gaining acceptance in wider circles of the paleoloantropologic community the last 30 years. Mannequin birds

The Mannequin birds, or "Manakin" live in the American tropics and display a wide variety of colors, shapes and courship behavior. Some species make snapping or buzzing sound with their wings, others jump from branch to branch or do elaborate dances in order to attract a mate. These birds can make whistles, trills, and buzzes with their characteristic sound box.

Anachronism Anacronism literally means something which is "agains" (ana) time (chronism). An anachronist prefers older, often obsolete cultural artifacts over newer ones. For example, a modern-day anachronist might choose to wear a top-hat, use quill pens, or use a typewriter. This choice may reflect an eccentricity, aesthetic preference, or an ethical acceptance or rejection of the societalrole of that artifact. An anachronism can also be an artifact which appears out of place archaeologically, geologically or temporally, or an argument/theme/idea belonging to "another" time.

Holy Roman Empire

The Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation was a union of territories in Central Europe during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period under a Holy Roman Emperor. The first Holy Roman Emperor was Otto I in 962 AD. The last was Francis II, who abdicated and dissolved the Empire in 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars. Kinkajou

The Kinkajou, also know as the "Honey Bear" is native to Central America and South America, this arboreal mammal is not very rare, though it is seldom seen by people because of its strict nocturnal habits. Kinkajous may be mistaken for ferrets or monkeys, but are not related. Like raccoons, kinkajous' remarkable manipulatory abilities rival those of primates. The kinkajou has a short-haired, fully prehensile tail (like some New World monkeys), which it uses as a "fifth hand" in climbing. Because their loudest call is shrill and resembles a woman's scream, one Spanish folk name for the kinkajou is "la llorona" ("the weeping woman"). Kinkajous have excellent senses of touch and smell, but poor vision: they cannot differentiate colors. Kinkajous are sometimes kept as pets. They are playful, generally quiet and docile, and have no noticeable odor. However, they can occasionally be aggressive. So, a new hypothesis links cosmic radiation with the busts and booms of biodiversity here on earth, I knew about the wobbly orbit of the sun around the milky way, but had never considered it's effects on life here on earth.

Either way, it's interesting because it shows us how the really grand-scale things might effect the more life-scale things here on earth.

Personology

Narcissistic self-examination follows:

As far as i know, personology is a pseudo science without much in the way of evidence to back it up. If it is a science however, it should be able to make some testable predictions about my personality, here's what it says about me (mind the overly enthusiastic language):

Nose profile heading down:

This person is very skeptical; he barely believes anything new unless he has got all the proof he needs. When dealing with him, bear in mind the number of questions he'll be asking you till he's assured.

We're off to a pretty good start I'd say.

The slopped forehead (The fast responder): That person builds conclusions fast, to the extent that he may interrupt you many times when talking because he keeps on guessing what are you about to say. This person may get bored talking to someone with a straight forehead because of the speed difference between them. The response of such a person is very fast, and that's why you tend to find most football and basket ball players with slopped foreheads, you're also most likely to notice how players with straight foreheads aren’t that good because of their slow responses. One final thing about such people is that they are fast decision-makers, which may cause them many problems.

I don't know about this one, I can feel pretty slow (linear) some times.

Small distance between eyes and eyebrows (The 'just do it' approach): Such person is a favorite of sales people because, when shopping, he buys on the spot; no hesitation or lingering. He may even buy stuff, only to discover later that he doesn’t even need them!! This person cannot wait to try something new, if he decides to do something the next day, he may not even be able to sleep that day; he just can't wait!!

This is also pretty far off the mark, though i have bought a few (inexpensive) things on a whim.

Small lips: A person with small lips tends to be less talkative. He tends to keep his private life away from others and may hide his inner emotions and feelings. He can also hold on to secrets for years, unlike the big lip guy who can hardly hold a secret, unless of course he's bound by some strong influencing force like religion that holds him from spreading all the news!! A thin lipped person may be very cautious and not an adventure-lover.

Granted, I might not be the most talkative (or emotional) person in the world.

Lip line straight with upwards endings: The optimist; this person is always expecting good things. He can encourage you much if you tell him about a new idea. You can consider taking his opinion to get some motivation but be sure not to be lured by the very positive outlook he may give you, as there may be some kind of problems and bad future expectations that he is ignoring or not putting much value to.

I might need some external input to evaluate my optimism/pessimism..

I cant quite decide on the eye distance, I'll go with small:

Small eye distance: That person has a very strong ability to concentrate. When he concentrates, he grows very focused and hates to be disturbed and may thus be easily stressed. That person has a deep interest in details; if you are telling him a story, make sure you include small details that other people may have no concern for.

I can definitely recognize myself here.

When nose tip is round : If the nose tip is round, observed from a front view, then this person is nosy!! He likes to know about everything and may strive for all the information he can get out of you, if there's something he only knows little about. Don't make him feel like you are hiding something if you want to get along with him. I think i might have a big nose, or a least a long one:

Big noses: If you think that your big nose makes you look bad or you don't really like its shape; cheer up, your big nose is giving out some great impressions!! People with big nose hate receiving orders and like being their own bosses; they don't like doing small tasks and prefer making bigger contribution. That's why these people won't hardly ever be your bar tender or you receptionist; they like higher ranks and may fight for them.

Sure, I don't like small tasks, but who does? That's a bit generic.

I don't really know about the chin, I'll go with 'round' and 'neither receding nor protruding chin':

Round chin: A person with a round chin is a friendly person; he is neither aggressive nor harsh.This person loves social gatherings and is usually very nice company to be with.

Most people are friendly, and like social gatherings!

Neither receding nor protruding chin: People with chins that are neither protruding nor receding have a balanced approach towards commitment and activities. They may be neither midway quitter nor people who commit under any cost.

Also a super-generic statement.

Straight eyebrows (The logical): When eyebrows are like a straight line then this person is a logical thinker. If you want to convince him of something, only use logic and proofs; don't try to convince him using emotions like saying "Hey, this is good; I feel it's nice" instead tell him something like "It has lots of benefits, number one is bla bla and number two is bla bla bla". Using a pen and a paper is the best way to convince such a person as you can point out all the advantages and disadvantages of the issue you are talking about.

Yeah, I think that might be me.

Meeting eyebrows (The non-stop thinker): when the eye brows are connected; when they meet each other through a bridge of hair, this person is a non-stop thinker. Such a person can't relax; he is always thinking and evaluating everything around him. If you relate to this category, make sure you learn how to relax so as not to harm your health. That person may have sleeping problems when approaching a major event in his life, on account of all the thinking he does.

* I'm skipping the step with the position of the ears, as i don't know if they're high or low. Same with the teeth, as i don't have much bigger front teeth than other teeth, and no big distance between them. Also, i don't have 'lines' between my eyes or 'grief-lines'.

A thin faced person is confident by experience and not by nature, that means that when trying something new, he may feel afraid or anxious.

Small ears: may be overwhelmed by hearing you talk a lot. So, if you are his manager and giving him instructions, make sure it's as brief as possible else he may sleep midway of your talk or start to get bored.

I only have moderately protruding cheek bones, but I'll include it as a curiosity:

All in all, I'd say about half of that sounds familiar, out of about 2-3 options for every trait, that's not so impressive. Also, we tend to agree to a lot of what is said about us since we're never quite the same person from day to day, and we might fit any description by simply recalling different episodes. I'd say you can't really tell who people are based on their faces, any more than by reading the

lines on the insides of their palms.
